Australians must demand to be respected by politicians for a plebiscite on marriage

The Turnbull government has a mandate for a plebiscite on marriage. Those opposing the plebiscite are engaging in hypocrisy.

A Fairfax-Ipsos poll found that “A thumping 69 per cent majority of voters backed the idea of having their say on the issue, rather than a parliamentary vote,” reported the Sydney Morning Herald on July 1, 2016, just before the Federal election.

A plebiscite costing $160 million is just 0.04% of the Federal government’s $400 billion budget, while the ABC gets around $1.1 billion annually of taxpayer funds from the Federal government; that’s over seven times the cost of a plebiscite, and it is paid to the ABC each year!

There will be no resolution of the issue until Australian’s vote on the issue after a full public debate.

A parliamentary vote won’t provide a lasting solution. There have already been 16 bills before Federal parliament. Each time one is unsuccessful another one is moved. Regardless of what decision the parliament makes, this is such a deep and important issue, that if the people do not have a say there will be festering dissent and disaffection, with even more marriage bills in the future, costing more time and more money.

Labor leader Bill Shorten says that a plebiscite would be “a taxpayer-funded platform for homophobia”.

Bill Shorten is flip flopping. Just before the Federal election Mr Shorten told a forum in his own seat of Maribyrnong that he was “completely relaxed about having some form of plebiscite… I would rather that the people of Australia could make their view clear on this, than leaving this issue to 150 people,” he said.

The plebiscite is not binding – “It’s just an opinion poll”
The vast majority of parliamentarians would respect the will of the people and it is the only practical democratic tool to resolve the issue in the current environment.

“A plebiscite would ‘unleash hate’ and lead to suicide”
This is a desperate, very irresponsible argument sending a dangerous message to young people that opponents of same-sex marriage hate gays and lesbians; and that in such a climate of hatred the suicide of some people is inevitable.

GLBT people have a higher suicide rate than the rest of the community.
So do indigenous people. Since the Federal Department of Health warns that “the suicide rate among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples [is] twice that of non-Indigenous people”, should we cancel the planned referendum for recognising indigenous people in the preamble of the Australian constitution for fear that the debate could be a platform for racists?

Turnbull has broken his promise of a plebiscite this year.
Those claiming Turnbull has broken his promise are the same people campaigning against a same-sex marriage plebiscite. Isn’t that hypocrisy?

Many of the same-sex marriage activists making this claim are the same people who praised Ireland for having a referendum on marriage.

Rodney Croome, from Just.Equality and former Australian Marriage Equality convener, praised last year’s Irish referendum saying it “will inspire marriage equality supporters … and quash the myth that Catholics and other people of faith oppose marriage equality.”

Grainne Healy, from Australian Marriage Equality and formerly of the Irish Yes Equality Campaign, didn’t regard the Irish referendum as a platform for homophobia and division. Rather, just after the Irish referendum: “Today we woke up, smiling, in a changed Ireland. A kinder, gentler, more accepting Ireland.”

Tiernan Brady and Grainne Healty, both from Australian Marriage Equality and both formerly of the Irish Yes Equality campaign, said the Irish referendum was an affirmation of the Irish people that was critical in reshaping Irish culture: “This touching — this uplifting — outcome belongs to the Irish people… The Irish people have shown their compassion … The majority said one simple word; for a minority, that word means everything.”

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said of the Irish referendum, it was “very exciting to see Ireland embrace equality,” yet the Greens party says an Australian plebiscite would just “unleash bigots”.

Hand written letters to your Senators are best or try to visit them.  If not, can you make a call to their electoral offices?

Focus on Labor, Xenophon Team and other crossbench Senators from your state/territory.

Also include an email to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Shorten.

Creation, Education and Nation

Its not now, never has been and never will be possible to build a great nation without alignment with the truth about who we are, how we got here and the purpose of our lives. The psalmist resonates with truth that touches the soul:

The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created.
He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.
He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs.
Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of him.
For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command.
The Lord frustrates the plans of the nations and thwarts all their schemes.
But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken.
What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people he has chosen as his inheritance (Psalm 33:6-12 NLT).

Does this mean the earth is only 4000 years old? I don’t think so. It takes 4 years for light to travel from the nearest star, Sirius, to earth, and 7000 years from Eagle Nebula which is visible through the Hubble telescope. Yet with an intelligence and  power beyond our comprehension daddy God created the universe in his time and invited us into relationship with himself through his only son Jesus.

Isn’t this the greatest issue facing the nation?… a secular education system that is disconnected from its purpose so that it now educates a nation with an avoidable ignorance that denies answers to the greatest questions: who am I, how did I get here, and what is the purpose of my existence?

These are the great questions of life to which atheists and secularists have no answer. So why let them run our education system? It’s time for re-formation of education across the nation.

Pray YES, Say YES and live YES for Traditional Marriage

The government of God is not determined by politics. The will and the ways of God are written in the Word of God for our highest good. Jesus said that: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Matt 24:35). Therefore let us learn from Jesus as our highest authority above media, politics and polls.

In learning from Scripture we understand that the unchanging principles of God’s Word are eternal from cover to cover. However the application of the ways of God shifted from LAW in the Old Testament to GRACE in the New Testament. On this basis let us develop our understanding of the Covenant of Marriage from the sure foundation of God’s Word.

As a guideline in this discussion there is a principle that informs our approach to regulating relationships on a national basis: While Civil Unions belong to the State the Covenant of Marriage belongs to God. This distinctive goes back to creation itself and gives us the way to be true to God’s word without being homophobic.

What did Jesus teach about marriage?

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6).

It’s clear that God designed and Jesus confirmed that marriage is between one man and one woman, and that only within this Covenant of Marriage do the two become one flesh with God’s blessing. In this way God designed marriage as the safe and magnificent environment for the raising of children.

It’s not biologically possible for two men or two women to become “one flesh” and procreate children. Marriage is not about individual rights. It is about a journey of discovery on how to live lives of honour, purity and blessing in our God given sexuality and relationships. The reader should also study the teaching of St Paul in Romans 1:24-32 to discover how we cause grief to God if we deviate from the magnificent plans he devised for our lives and our families.

In Hebrews 13:4 we read:

Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you”.

How excellent is this guidance and promise? God wants to be part of our marriages and families. Accordingly we need to do family his way to welcome his presence, protection and providence.

God wants children to be loved and cared for by a mum and a dad; to have dads who love, adore and protect their moms. God wants families to grow up safe and secure from the destructiveness of sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse and poverty. He wants children to grow up in an environment of an enduring loving union where a mum and a dad lead family free from anger, jealousy, fear and violence.

While these risks are always possible, we have continuously available in Christ his solutions of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation.

This is a vision of beauty and joy for marriage as God intended it. God wants kids to grow up in the joy, freedom and hope that is found in the security of a family that functions according to the wisdom and ways of God.

To experience this plan we do not look to the media or politics but to the magnificence, wisdom and beauty of the Word of God.

In both families and government the greatest solutions that exist come from aligning our personal and national life with the will and the ways of God. God designed creation for us to enjoy him and each other forever. He knows how it works best so let’s be informed by his Word.

From the very beginning God designed the three-fold Covenant of Marriage between himself, one man and one woman for our greatest blessing in families.

Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Easter Saturday – Death Disrobed

What happened between Jesus death and resurrection? What can we learn from the prophets, for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Rev19:10). As the heart of the prophets is to bring us into the presence of God let’s start with John in Revelation 12:10 -

The devil accuses us before our God day and night - what does this mean?… God uses the enemy to transpose our sins to the court of heaven. Here we have no other disposition other than to kneel in humility and confess the truth about our guilt.

And how does Father God handle our guilt?  Read with me in Romans 15:3 - the insults of those who insult us have fallen on Jesus. Jesus wore our guilt upon himself at the Cross. This transferred sin was so obnoxious that the Father could not even look upon his despoiled son on the Cross. Jesus was disgraced with our disgrace.
He was vicariously disfigured by our guilt that he carried to the point of crying out - ”My God, my God why have you forsaken me” (Matt 27:46) and in Isaiah 52:14 - “his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness”.
This is all about us. Our debt. Our being effectively crucified in Christ – Gal 2:20 - “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me”. Do you not see the love of his Holy identification? His complete acceptance of the transference of our sin to himself. The transference of our guilt to the innocent Jesus?
Zechariah now takes over the story – we know the following is the prophet’s insight into Jesus time in hell because his revelation is - symbolic of things to come, when God removes the sin of the land in a single day (Zech 3:8-9)…
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.” Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by (Zech 3:1-5).
Death Disrobed
The name “Joshua” in Hebrew and “Jesus” in English are the same word. Here the prophet is sharing with us what happened to Jesus after he died on the Cross. Here is the prophet’s account of Easter Saturday…
The filthy robes represented the satanic accusations transferred by the court of heaven from the prosecution against us to Jesus. Jesus carries these accusations upon himself to death and hell – where the power of God raised him to life. A resurrection so powerful that even the dead were raised to life to walk free in Jerusalem -
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people (Matt 27:50-53).
The curtain in the Temple between the Holy place and the most Holy place was split from top to bottom. No longer do we need a priest to come into the holy of holies on our behalf. The blood of Christ has fulfilled every need for sacrifice.
The angel in Zechariah 3 called out – “Take of his filthy clothes“. Do we understand what took place people? Do we hear and understand? Are we the good soil who hears and understands as Jesus said in Matt 13: 23?
  • Zechariah tells how our sins were stripped off Jesus in hell itself.
  • Permanently transferred via the cross – to hell.
Our sins, pastpresent and future no longer have any life in them. They are dead. They have been disposed of for ever under our feet in hell where they belong. Cry out now people – Y E S !  Thank you Jesus for such deliverance -
“Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.” (Romans 4:7-8).
Now Jesus – and we in him – are given resurrection garments to wear. Clothes as white as snow (Zech 3:3, Matt 28:3). No longer despoiled. Now clothed with the victory of sinless purity. These are the robes we need to wear at the wedding banquet of the lamb (Matt 22:1-14).
No longer did Jesus wear man’s crown of thorns on his head but the new turban (Zech 3:5) of the High Priest (Heb 8:1). Jesus now took over the role of Aaron -
“Make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal: holy to the Lord. Fasten a blue cord to it to attach it to the turban; it is to be on the front of the turban. It will be on Aaron’s forehead, and he will bear the guilt involved in the sacred gifts the Israelites consecrate, whatever their gifts may be. It will be on Aaron’s forehead continually so that they will be acceptable to the Lord (Exodus 28:36-38).
From this dear reader we can see that Jesus is the fulfilment of Israel. Jesus is a Jew and we who are gentiles are grafted into the redeemed Israel through Christ. There is no replacement theology. The true church is grafted into Israel through our Jewish High Priest and the prophet tells us that one our Jewish brothers and sisters shall also come into the same revelation of fulfilment in Christ (Zech 12:10-14).
Jesus’ Unchangable Defeat of Satan
At the crucifixion Satan thought he had won. He started an insurrection amongst God’s created people to crucify and kill the author of life. Do you understand this dear reader?
Now in his pride and arrogance we can imagine him strutting through the catacombs of hell with his enemy Christ dead!  But wait, what is this? An emerging light in the darkness of hell. How can this be?
I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades (Rev 118).
The hairs stand up on the back of Satan’s neck. Shivers transverse his spine. The realisation hits him like a brick. The RISEN CHRIST IS NOW IN CHARGE IN HIS TURF.
Satan has lost the war and can never turn it around. Over. Done-in. Defeated for Eternity. Jesus now turns to Satan with the words of the victor – GIVE ME THE KEYS!  Jesus now holds the keys of death and hell. Our future is now in Jesus hands, not the enemies. TURN TO JESUS PEOPLE !
On resurrection Saturday Jesus walks through the prison of hell and preaches freedom and release to the repentant. Freedom from the gloomy bondage of hell – but no freedom for the fallen angels (2 Peter 2:4, Heb 10:26-27).
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits (1 Peter 3:18-19).
For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit (1 Peter 4:6).
So now we are ready to worship on Easter Sunday. Ready to come before our God with praise and thanksgiving, free in Christ with a magnificent future ahead of us -
But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.” What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? (Eph 4:7-8)
Let us rejoice that Jesus descended into hell to unload our sins, take on the devil, preach the good news of forgiveness and draw us to himself through the redemption of his life given for us. We were the captives but now he gives us gifts of redemption, forgiveness and a new life. He raised us from the lower earthly regions. Yay !!!
And now he calls us to this future:
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
As we his people walk and talk and live out this calling in the unity of John 17 we can take back this nation for Christ. There is no enemy that can stop us apart from ourselves.
So come on Church – arise to our calling in the 21st Century. Let’s take back the Great South Land of the Holy Spirit and give unto God this nation through the power and calling of the Great Commission….
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matt 28:18-20).

War for the Soul of the Nation

At the start of 2015 we are immersed in a war for the soul of the nation. This battle will set the stage for the kind of nation our children and grand-children will inherit. The way men and women of faith wage war in Australia (2 Cor 10:3-6) will extend hope to the nations who cannot find answers in atheism that can withstand the ravages of radical Islam and the spiritual poverty of  hedonism that is causing untold damage through outcomes like substance abuse, domestic violence and the loss of respect and safety across the nation.

Meantime the established church is in its own battle of survival because it has lost the soul of the nation. God only knows the numbers, but of our twenty five odd million population some twenty million will live, die and find themselves in the company of the devil rather than the love of Jesus. In the face of this catastrophe our church leaders defend their status quo because this is where their power base and relevancy is found. Meantime the church is tarred by the stench of sexual abuse of children in its care, and the world is not listening to the church for its values and hopes.

The Global Marketplace Exchange Conference (GME) on 5-7 Feb in Melbourne is a forum of Re-Formation that includes searching out what Jesus meant by his “ecclesia” that the gates of hell could not withstand (Matt 16:13-25). What did Jesus mean by this and how is it meant to function across church and marketplace in the 21st Century? Jesus used the Greek secular word “ecclesia” which is about bringing holistic kingdom leadership to a village, town or city. Today we need a re-formation of the Kingdom of God being released across both church and marketplace for the highest good of the nation.

GME is drawing together hungry hearts and sharp minds from across the domains of church, family, business, government, health, sport, justice, education, the creative arts and not for profits. This is about the development of strategic vision and practical collaboration between people who do not settle for the status quo. This conference is a place of consultation, discovery and participation as we exchange insights, experience, biblical learning, prayer and new relationships that builds hope for the future in Christ.
